What is the DPI and polling rate?

 The polling rate of a mouse is the frequency at which it sends the position data of the mouse to a computer. The polling rate is usually measured in Hz, or the number of times per second that the host sends a query to the mouse. For example, a mouse with a 1000Hz polling rate sends 1000 position reports to the host for every second that passes. The mouse updates the host as to its position 1000 times per second. This is the same as a mouse reporting its position once every millisecond.

The rate at which the computer checks the keyboard to see if any keys have been pressed. This is usually expressed in hertz (Hz). The current standard is 125 Hz. Programs can open the keyboard to check for keypresses at any time, though it is more efficient to do so during the vertical blank period.

DPI or Dots per inch is a standard measurement of how many pixels can be laid out per inch. When it comes to gaming, the higher the DPI rating, the more sensitive the mouse is. This means you can move the mouse less and still get the same response. DPI is usually measured in dots per inch. The most commonly known DPI setting for gaming mice is 1600 DPI.

This is the standard for most gaming mice. However, there are some mice in the market that offer a higher DPI, specifically 3200 DPI mice, and even 5000 DPI mice. The higher the DPI rating, the more the mouse will cost. If you have a high DPI rating, you need a mouse pad that can handle the high resolution. Otherwise, you may experience tracking issues.
